Fire Damage: Their Classifications, Categories and Sources

Fires are among the most devastating and terrifying forces Mother Nature can throw our way. When homeowners think about fires, they usually think about the destruction of the flames themselves. But there is actually more to it than that. In today’s post, your friends over at Falcon Nest delves deeper into the types of fire damage, their classes and classifications to give you a better understanding.

The 3 Major Sources of Fire Damage

  • Flame Damage. This is the most obvious and what immediately comes to mind when people think about fire damage. This type of damage is caused directly by the actual flames.
  • Smoke Damage. The second major type of fire damage is the one caused by smoke. Smoke damage discolors surfaces of your building and will also leave strong unpleasant odors behind.
  • Damage Caused by Other Substances. This type of damage is the result of putting out the actual blaze such as water or chemical damage.

The 6 Classes of Fire Damage

  • Class A. The result of a fire involving flammable solids including paper, rubber, wood and cloth.
  • Class B. Consists of fire damage as a result of flammable liquids or solids that can become liquefied such as gasoline, oil, waxes and plastics.
  • Class C. Involves flammable gasses such as propane, butane and natural gas.
  • Class D. Fires that are started as a result of combustible materials which may include potassium, sodium and magnesium.
  • Class E. Fires are started from factors found in both Class A and Class B with the difference being that Class E fires will also involve electrical elements.
  • Class F. A fire that is started as a result of cooking oils and fats.

Fire Damage as Classified By Your Insurance Company

Primary Fire Damage. This refers to damage that is sustained as a direct result of the flames.

Secondary Fire Damage. Refers to damage sustained due to smoke, water and corrosive substances. It may also include damage that is sustained due to exposure to the elements after the blaze.
